| I'd been asking Julia to sit for a portrait for about two weeks before she finally agreed, probably because my departure from China was imminent. She asked me dozens of questions about America, and used the opportunity to brush up on her English, which was pretty good. I think all the translators liked having access to native English speakers when they had it, because it was so difficult to get pronunciation. |
